by Joseph Kershaw

Area rugs are one of the most marvelous home decor elements ever created. What other furnishing provides warmth for a cold floor, give a certain mood to a room, or even act as an art object?

If you never purchased an area rug before, you're missing out. It is an investment which will change a rooms design without having to change anything else in the room. There are so many different shapes, sizes, and patterns to choose from that it is impossible not to find one you love.

There are also many different materials to choose from when you're looking for an area rug. You have natural elements, synthetic fibers, and if you're lucky you'll come across the hand made rugs which are hard to come by.

So you wonder if the area rug is more for art or for protection. The answer is both. It will give your home a great design feel as well as give you a softer cozier feel to your home.

Here are a few tips you may want to reap upon before purchasing an area rug for your first time.

Ask yourself where exactly you're looking to place this area rug. Whether it is in a busy area where many people come in and out of or is it more for the look rather than the wear and tear it may come in contact with.

If the area rug is going to be placed somewhere that it may be used as a seating area, you want to make sure it has enough padding. A great padded area rug is a must as well in many cases if used in a highly trafficked area.

Padding is a must in many occasions. You either want the padding underneath the area rug to make it softer to the feel or even for noise muffling.

Make sure you know how large or small the area rug should be before heading out to purchase one. You want the rug to fit properly not look like it belongs in another part of the room since it's too small for the largest room in the home.

Dining areas are a great idea to place an area rug in. Just make sure you add a few extra feet onto the width and length. You want to make sure that each chair leg is either all on the rug or all off. You don't want it to be off balance causing a situation.

Hall runners are another great way to brighten up a space which quite frequently doesn't have much natural light. Using a lighter colored area rug will give you a bit more visible sense when entering.
