Portrait Photography Techniques
Faces of people have always been the cherished subjects of photographers. However, portrait photography isn't just about capturing a face; instead it is about making one person or a group of persons come alive in a photo by depicting them in their splendour.
A good portrait photograph attains a non-conventional aspect by capturing the subject from an exclusive camera angle and in a mental state that is representative of the subject. However, portraits of one person or of entire families are also clicked by photographers, and these are normally stuck in family albums.
A proper close up bringing the person's face into focus differentiates a truly professional portrait photograph from an amateur one. This can be done by tuning camera settings to blur the subject's background so that his or her face receives the maximum focus. A wider aperture used in a camera can give perfect results for this aim. However, in some portrait photographs where the person needs to be seen along with the background, especially in images taken out in the open, a normal aperture serves the purpose better.
Photography is all about falling of light into the photographic medium; therefore inadequate light has always been a photographer's cause of concern. However, by adhering to some basic photography tips, a decent portrait photograph can be obtained. A facial profile of a subject sitting by a window looks unique and appealing, particularly when sunlight illuminates a side of the face. A reflective sheet can be used to highlight the other side of the subject's face. However, portrait photography is best done in studios as lighting can be controlled there.
Another important thing that you must remember is that the more comfortable a subject is during the photography session, higher the chances are of getting an ideal portrait photograph. The human element in photography is so important that all technical efforts will fail to make it a good portrait if the person posing for the picture is stiff and uncomfortable before the camera.
