How to Change Your Home Decor
Home decor is a touchy subject. So many people feel that they have fantastic interior design abilities and that theyre home is just gorgeous. That is, until they walk into a place that has been properly decorated.
All of a sudden, theyre marveling at what they see while uttering kinds words of praise and all the time thinking just wait till I do this to my place.
There are a myriad of magazines that will help you find that perfect style and give you tons of visuals to set you on the right track but very few of them tell you how to go about changing the look of your entire home.
Changing your decor starts with a very basic process; change your thinking. You've lived with the same staid, boring paint and flooring for years. How about those kitchen cupboards? Do they still do it for you? Probably not.
For some it might be a blow to the ego but, one of the best ways to bust through this important first stage is to find an impartial but knowledgeable third party to take a look at the current state of your home and give you the straight goods on how it looks.
Having someone whos style you admire would be the smartest thing to do. Do you have that friend or, better yet, acquaintance who will tell you the honest truth? That's the person to start with. A friend will often sugar-coat things for you so if you can find someone whos opinion you value but who doesnt have a lot vested in a friendship, its more likely that they will give you the straight goods on what youve done with the place.
Before your expert tours your home, set the ground rules by letting them know if you're planning a major project or simply a bit of minor redecorating. Then its time for a room to room tour as you take notes based on the advice youre receiving.
Whether youre extremely budget conscious or its pie in the sky time, there many unique and interesting ways to change and improve the look and feel of your home.
One piece of advice I cannot stress enough is the need to sit down and set a strict budget for the project. This gives you a guideline to determine what you can and cannot expect to do.
Once youve established just how much cabbage you want to throw at the problem, I mean makeover, start to decide what rooms are the most important. If your goal is to show off your antiques than maybe you need to spend more on your living room than on your bathroom. However, if youve always wanted that steamroom/rainfall shower then a large portion of the budget might be delegated to the master bath.
Regardless of how you want to present your home, the budget has to be the primary focus when planning things out.
