Digital High School-The Coming Tsunami2
Technology is becoming ever more sophisticated and advances in education are moving in sync. Traditional methods are being replaced by digital. Now, in the area of education, the online high school is breaking into the mainstream.
This is a change that we are so immersed in that we may notice it. If you put a frog in a pot of water and heat the water slowly, the frog will not try to jump out until it is too late and the water is boiling. I don't think the digital changes are going to boil us, but we are quite surrounded by them.
Traditional education, where an instructor delivers a lesson to a packed hall full of students, is highly profitable for private institutions, but highly inefficient. In public schools, this a costly, and increasingly old fashioned method of learning. Enter virtual schools. In the, not so distant future, traditional brick and mortar schools will be pushed aside by digital education.
Disruption comes when one business plan becomes untenable due to technology advances, and struggles to prolong its life. This is quite obvious in the music and film industry. The media switch from analogue to digital has thrown licensing, and copyright assumptions into turmoil. The dinosaurs of the industry are reeling and trying everything to preserve their profits. Kids are copying music and videos, and hacking DRM at a blinding speed.
Photography has already shifted to the digital world. For this industry, digital photography has meant cheap photography for the masses, difficult copyright issues, and manipulation of originals.
Many of us clearly recall bulky film cameras with a maximum of 36 shots, and waiting days for processing. Today fancy little digital cameras are everywhere. Professional digital camera are producing eye popping images with much less effort and expertise required.
Digital books, and newspapers are finding an increasing market. I own a portable ebook reader. It is small, light, and can be loaded with 1,500 books. I love that thing. I read a lot, and have loaded a library of free books into the device. I have also bought a few books, and paid a discounted price for them. I can also get popular newspapers, and magazines for it. I still like paper books for their feel, and durability, but more and more I am reading in digital format. It is on a 3G network at no extra fee and can fetch an ebook in 30 seconds wherever I am in the U.S.. It is more convenient than books.
I'm kind of an old guy, and have no small amount of nostalgia for old ways of doing things. Nostalgia is all that it is, however. For efficiency, and accessibility, nothing beats digital. Education will go the way of all analogue media.
Digital schools are destined to replace our present system. There will be resistance. My guess is that socialization, and personal teaching will fuel the hold outs. Even these reasons will be replaced by the new.
The evidence is all around us. There must be a better use for those huge old school buildings. We need our best mentors teaching online, and a slick new education paradigm.
